Carmen-Xin Yee stun Japanese duo at Indonesia Open

The world No 22 pair came from a game down to beat world No 17 duo Kaho Osawa-Mai Tanabe 15-21, 21-9, 21-19 in a 66-minute match at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta. The victory levelled their head-to-head record at 1-1. The Malaysians faced an uphill battle after trailing 10-16 in the deciding game, but showed great composure to fight back and secure a place in the last-16. They will face Japan’s Rui Hirokami-Sayaka Hobara for a spot in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik advanced to the last-16 after defeating compatriots Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King 21-15, 21-14 in 31 minutes. Aaron-Wooi Yik will take on Indonesia’s rising pair Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin in the second round tomorrow. National women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah have also advanced to the last-16 of the World Tour Super 1000 tournament. The world No 2 pair, who finished as runners-up last year, had little trouble defeating Canada’s world No 37 duo of Jackie Dent-Crystal Lai 21-13, 21-14 in just 24 minutes. In the second round tomorrow, Pearly-Thinaah, who recently returned to action after a two-month layoff due to Pearly’s back injury, will face Taiwan’s Hsu Ya Ching-Sung Yu Hsuan.
